Kenyan Peasants League's take on Climate Change
As Cop27 fastly approaches,Kenyan Peasants Farmers(KPL) wonder if enough is being done to counter climate change. There have been mixed reactions as the world at large faces extreme weather conditions that could have been easily averted if global emissions were curbed earlier as recommended.
The Kenyan Peasants League have been on the forefront of this war by educating Kenyan citizens on how they can combat climate change effects. They believe that COP27 need s to change tact and face the situation head on instead of merely holding meetings in Egypt that have little or no impact as the ozone layer keeps depleting.
Due to severe drought across the African continent, starvation is real and affecting millions of school going children hence leading to most of them dropping out of school.According to UNICEF, approximately 3.6 million children from Kenya,Somalia and Ethiopia drop out of school every year so that they can assist their hunger stricken families fend for food.
KPL Secretary General Calleb David Otieno noted that the government turns a blind eye on multinational companies that seek to mine coal in Kitui hence worsening a situation that is already dire.Evironmmental degradation is causing water catchment areas in the tropicals to have lower water levels and oasis are running dry in deserts thus affecting millions globally
Members of KPL are all in agreement that words alone cannot combat climate change and that more action needs to be taken. The members regularly carry out activities such as planting tress, recycling and reusing of plastics, doing regular cleanups..etc in order to save our planet before it is too little too late.
